Now that the state is mandating that we (teachers, schools, administrators, janitors, school nurses, bus drivers, etc.) clarify to our students what are the desired outcomes are for any given course, commonly referred to as Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs), I, in my willingness to comply in both the application and the spirit of the edict, offer this as the absolute and most fundamental of desired outcomes, not only in my specific discipline of sociology, but in the study of the liberal arts as a whole.
